Gene Fleming 
February 11, 1943 - July 10, 2013

Gene Fleming, 70, of Canyon Lake, formerly of Beaumont, died Wednesday, July 10, 2013. He was born on February 11, 1943, to Juanette Lee Choate Fleming and Leslie Harvey Fleming, in Beaumont, and was a graduate of South Park High School. Gene received a scholarship to play football for Rice University, Houston, in 1961.  He was a tremendous athlete having made the All Southwest Conference team and was honored by Rice for his football skills. Along with football, he also enjoyed playing golf, baseball, and would refinish golf clubs. Gene was an altar server at St. Anthony and was dedicated to the Roman Catholic Church.

 

Survivors include his wife, Peggy Fleming, children, Donna Whittleman of Conroe, and Richard Fleming; stepsons, Kent Evans and his wife Dora, of San Antonio; Mark Evans of Austin, grandchildren, Courtney Brown, Johnny Whittleman, Ryan Fleming, Roddy Fleming, Acelyn Evans and Elliana Evans; brother, Michael Fleming and his wife Kathy of Saltillo.

 

He is preceded in death by his parents.

 

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, July 13, 2013, at St. Anthony Cathedral Basilica, 700 Jefferson Street, Beaumont, with interment to follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Park, under the direction of Broussard’s, 1605 North Major Drive, Beaumont.
