Sylvia Lee Mayes, 70, of Anahuac, died Thursday, June 27, 2013, at Dubuis Hospital, Beaumont. She was born on March 22, 1943, in Cheyenne, Wyoming, the only child of Alis Elisabeth Walker Mayes and Sergeant Robert Richard Mayes.
During her father’s service to the United States Army, she traveled all over the world with her parents. When her dad’s military career ended, Sylvia and her parents came home to Double Bayou.
Sylvia was very devout in her religion and professed her faith as a Christian at a very early age. She grew into a beautiful young lady, and was a graduate of Double Bayou High School. Her hobbies included flowers, sewing, painting, making leather crafts, and she enjoyed playing the piano. Her passion was collecting teddy bears, which she had many of.
Survivors include her special friend, Frankie Long; caregivers, Archie and Dollie Humphrey; caregiver and good friend, Mary Cousins; and many friends and relatives to cherish her memory.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
A gathering of Ms. Mayes’ family and friends will begin at 10:00 a.m., with her funeral service to follow at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, July 3, 2013, at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, 338 Church Road, Double Bayou, Texas. Her interment will follow at Martha Godfrey Cemetery, Double Bayou, under the direction of Broussard’s, 134 West Buccaneer, Winnie.
