Mildred Strube, 90, was called to be with her Lord on Saturday, March 23, 2013, in Lumberton. Mildred was born on November 12, 1922, in Rule, Texas, to Frances and William Hills. Mildred grew up in Rule, a small West Texas town, where her father owned a hardware store. She was an outgoing and popular girl in school and spent summers at Camp Waldemar in the Texas Hill Country. After the death of her father, the family; mother, Frances, Mildred, and sister, Nancy moved to Denton where Mildred attended Texas Women’s University and North Texas State University, earning a degree in Home Economics.
In 1949 Mildred got a teaching job in Port Neches, where friends introduced her to Earl Strube, a chemist at Neches Butane. Mildred and Earl were married in 1951 and Mildred quit teaching to raise their three children; Carol, Sharla, and Kent. In 1968 Mildred went back to teaching Home Economics at Port Neches Groves High School where she taught through the mid-1970’s. She also taught at Lamar Tech. After retirement, Mildred and Earl moved to Wildwood and later to Lumberton.
Mildred enjoyed an active social life. She and Earl traveled extensively, both in the United States and abroad, including Europe, Israel, and Egypt. She also belonged to a number of bridge clubs over the years and was a participant inthe Red Hat Society.
Survivors include her children, Carol Wyatt of Tulsa, Oklahoma; Sharla Strube and her husband, Vic Hinterlang, of Austin; Kent Strube and his wife, LiLi, of Union City, California; Gary Strube and his wife, Barbara, of Colmesneil; and Kenneth Strube of Houston; grandchildren, Justin Strube, Kelli Brug, Gary Dean Strube, Jimmy Strube, and Jina and Layla Strube; great-grandchildren, Shane Brug, Garret Strube, Michael Strube, and Logan Strube; sister, Nancy Tarbox and her husband, E.J. Tarbox and their children, Monte Tarbox, Janis Tarbox Fisher, Jane Auhl, and Jonathan Tarbox; all of Highlands, North Carolina; and daughter-in-law, Betty Strube. She is preceded in death by her parents; and husband of sixty-two years, Earl Strube.
A gathering of Mrs. Strube’s family and friends will be from 5:30 p.m. until 7:30 p.m., Wednesday, March 27, 2013, at Broussard’s, 490 Cemetery Road, Silsbee. Her funeral service will be 2:00 p.m., Thursday, March 28, 2013, at Broussard’s, with interment to follow at Village Mills Cemetery, Village Mills.
