Kenneth Samuel Young, Sr. 
May 3, 1928 - August 12, 2012

Kenneth S. Young, Sr. 84, a longtime local businessman of Nederland, passed away Sunday morning, August 12, 2012, at the home of his son and family in Nederland.   Kenneth Sr. was born to Samuel and Ida Young on May 3, 1928, in Glenn Lyon, Pennsylvania. He was the oldest of three children and ran their family dairy farm in Muhlenberg, Pennsylvania, until his mid- twenties, when he went to work for Neisners Brothers Department store in New York City. There he met his future wife, Elaine Sullivan of Rochester, New York.   Elaine, like her husband, had aspirations of owning their own business. After seventeen years in management with Neisners Brothers and being transferred all over the country, they had five children.  Kenneth and his family settled in Nederland, Texas in 1967, where he opened his first business in Port Neches and several years later in Nederland. Over the years many changes took place from being a service station that sold Texaco, Gulf, Chevron, and Citgo products, to now being Young's Tobacco Propane and Uhaul. The business is now being operated by second generation son Kenneth Jr. and his wife Cheryl, and third generation grandchild, Dianna Young Wion.  

Kenneth joined the Lions Club as a charter member of the North Shore Lions Club in Houston on October 1, 1964, transferred his membership in 1967 to the Nederland Lions Club, and recently the Nederland Professional Lions Club. Kenneth served his club well over the years holding every office, serving the zone, region, and district.

 

Kenneth is survived by his children, Susan Gregor and her husband, Roger, of Houston, Kenneth Young, Jr. and his wife, Cheryl, of Nederland, David Young and his wife, Carmen, of Odessa, Kathie Wilkerson of Nacogdoches, Jeff Young of Houston; longtime friend and companion, Karen Nash of Port Neches; step-daughter, Kim Sheffield of Nederland;  and many grandchildren and great grandchildren

 

He is preceded in death by his wife Elaine; grandsons, Kenneth Young III (Kenny) and Dalton Young.   A gathering of Mr. Young's family and friends will be from 12:30 p.m. until 2:00 p.m., Saturday, August 18, 2012, at Broussard's, 505 North 12th Street, Nederland. His funeral service will begin at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, August 18, 2012, at Broussard's, with interment to follow at Memory Gardens of Jefferson County, Nederland.
