Rosalind Eldridge Horwitz, a lifelong Beaumont Southern Lady, passed away on November 1st in Houston where she had resided for the past four years. Roz was born on November 8, 1921 to Ervie and Herman Philipson, their second daughter. Her sister Lolly, already 9 years old, was pleased to have a living baby doll. Roz married Oscar Eldridge Jr. and together they had three daughters. Properly raising the girls was what Rosalind was about. She also took time to serve with PTA, Temple Sisterhood, Bluebirds and Campfire Girls. Taking her girls to all their after school activities demanded much of her time, but she still fit in a few hours a week to play poker, canasta, and mahjong with her many friends. Playing games was a lifelong passion which Roz passed on to her daughters, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Roz lovingly attended many grandchildren events. After marriage to Oscar, Roz became an avid and highly skilled deer hunter and saltwater fisherman. Another talent was creating original needlepoint items including eyeglass cases, pillows, and wall hangings of all sizes.
Roz and Oscar were married almost 32 years before Oscar’s untimely death. Ten years later, in 1982, Roz married Herman Horwitz. Continuing her love of dancing that she and Oscar had shared, Roz and Herman not only danced at clubs but also shipboard and at many social events. They were the hit! Roz and Herman were married 28 years before he died in 2010. She is also preceded in death by her parents, sister, and infant grandson. Roz is survived by her daughters Gail Eldridge (Meredith Johnson), Kay Stein (Dennis), and Betty Babendure; stepson Larry Horwitz (Mary); grandchildren Dina Stein, Brent Hyman (Jennifer), Tracy Tommack (Michael), Carly Johnson (Andrew), and Orin Babendure; and seven great grandchildren.
Roz’s daughters wish to thank Vera Brown, caregiver, for her dedication and loving attention to their Mother. Family also wants to thank Ashley Wilson, Fanta Jalabah and Maryenis Lopez for their care. Karen Buckstaff RN was not only skilled in her care to Roz but offered support to family as well; Mercy and Foulematou were especially helpful, and we thank them too.
A graveside service with Rabbi Roy Walter officiating will be held at 3:00 p.m., Wednesday, November 2, 2011, at Hebrew Rest, 2291 Pine Street, Beaumont, under the direction of Broussard’s, 2000 McFaddin Avenue, with a reception following at Temple Emanuel, 1120 Broadway Street, Beaumont.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the charity of your choice.
