Abraham I. Miller July 11, 1911 – August 27, 2011 A committal service will be held for Abraham Issac Miller at 1:30 p.m., Sunday, October 23, 2011, at Hebrew Rest, 2291 Pine Street, under the direction of Broussard’s, 2000 McFaddin Avenue, Beaumont. Abraham Miller, a retired business owner from Beaumont, Texas, died in August at his home in Dallas. He celebrated his 100th birthday on July 11th in Dallas, with more than seventy-five friends and family members present. He was preceded in death by his wife of sixty-two years, Sylvia Carrow Miller, and daughter, Susan Miller Gerson Bailey. A native of New York City, Mr. Miller moved to Beaumont in 1946, working for the Fair Department Store and, later, with his wife, as owners and operators of the Toy Box and Infants World, a children’s toy and furniture store. He was active in Rotary and was a long-time member of Beaumont’s Temple Emanuel. He moved to Dallas in 2002. Mr. Miller graduated from New Utrecht High School in Brooklyn in 1928 and from City College of New York in 1932, where he played center for City College’s winning basketball team. He received an M.B.A. from New York University and later served as mentor to many Beaumont entrepreneurs and small business owners through SCORE (Senior Corps of Retired Executives). A true sports lover, Mr. Miller could tick-off stats and names for nearly every team and player to appear on the American sports scene for well over a century. Among his favorite games was golf, of which he was an ardent player, enjoying especially the games when he partnered with his son. In later years, he kept his athleticism sharpened with daily workouts at the gym and miles-long walks. His second passion was bridge, preferably playing duplicates. Mr. Miller is survived by his son, Charles Sanford Miller and his wife, Ursula Barrett-Miller of Bethesda, Maryland; granddaughters, Ellen Tagtmeier and her husband, Brian, Lori Gorewitz and her husband, Marc, and Nira Miller and her husband, Don Lott of the Houston area; great-grandchildren, Sydney, Whitney, Parker and Carson; sister, Mae Miller Kalus, of Florida; and many, many loving cousins and friends on the East and West Coasts.
