George Gierow
February 6, 1944 - September 19, 2011

After a courageous battle with brain cancer, George Gierow, 67, of Nederland, died Monday, September 19, 2011, at Christus Hospital St. Elizabeth, Beaumont.  Born February 6, 1944, to Stella Douglas and Robert B. Gierow in Colgate, Oklahoma, he was a resident of the Mid-County area for twenty-five years.

George received his Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Arkansas.  He spent his entire professional career as a civil engineer with Texaco, beginning in Lawrenceville, Illinois and then moving to El Paso.  In 1986 George came to Port Arthur where he retired as a Division Maintenance Manager.

He loved the outdoors and spent his leisure time camping and exploring the backcountry.  George was an avid fisherman and hunter.  His most favorite areas were the Gila Wilderness in New Mexico and the Colorado Rockies.  His planning and organizational skills, which were so valued at work, served him and his outdoor companions well on many remote area trips.  Those companions will continue to carry George on future trips in their hearts.

He is survived by his son, Douglas Gierow of Salt Lake City, Utah; sister Dee Ann Johnson of Arlington; and numerous cousins and friends.
