Genevieve Smith, 92, of The Woodlands, died Monday, August 29, 2011. Genevieve was born at her family farm in Spring Grove Township, Green County, Wisconsin to Arvilla Mae (Marsh) Zimmerman and Charles Clinton Zimmerman on April 27, 1919. After college graduation, Genevieve was accepted for Officer Training in the newly formed WAVES of the United States Navy. In 1943, she was assigned to the Communication Department of the CNO. Later, she was transferred to Pearl Harbor where she served as a Naval Watch Officer. After her marriage, she made her home in Beaumont for many years. In 1959, she joined the faculty at Lamar University as an instructor in Spanish and German and later, English as a second language. She enjoyed the study of languages, foreign travel, her beautiful garden, her children and grandchildren. Survivors include her children, Laura, David and Stephen Smith; two grandchildren, Brian Smith and Sarah Wagoner; two great-grandchildren; sister, Esther Vehmeier of Freeport, Illinois; and many nieces, nephews, and wonderful friends from her many activities in Beaumont. She is preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Milo, Everett, Shirl and George; and by her husband, Joseph Aubrey Smith of Beaumont. A gathering of her family and friends will begin at 12:00 p.m., Saturday, September 3, 2011, at Broussard’s, 2000 McFaddin Avenue, Beaumont. Her memorial service will be at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, September 3, 2011, at Broussard’s, with cremation arrangements under the direction of Broussard’s.
