James "Jay" Wylie Seale

James Wylie “Jay” Seale passed away on Wednesday, January 20, 2010 at the age of 97. Jay was born in Cleburn, Texas on October 27, 1912. He grew up in Dallas, but had been a resident of Beaumont since 1935. He was preceded in death by his wife of fifty years, Denise Mattison Seale. Jay is survived by his wife, Edna G. Seale; two children, Jayne Donalson of Jacksonville, Florida and Dr. James M. Seale and his wife Joan of Houston; four grandchildren, Elizabeth Stanley and her husband Trent, Stephen Donalson and his wife Cindy, Deryl Seale and his wife Allison, and Wendie Childress and her husband Matthew; and five great-grandchildren. Jay retired from Jefferson Drug Company as sales manager. He was an active member of First United Methodist Church which he joined in June 1938. He served on the Board of Stewards and taught the Faith Sunday School Class for fifty years. He was a past president of the Downtown Lions Club, a 32nd degree Mason of Masonic Lodge 286, and a member of the Scottish Rite. Additionally, he was a member of the Beaumont Sales Club, was active in The United Way, and served on the Board of Directors of the Best Years Center. Jay was an avid golfer and was a leading amateur golfer in Beaumont. In retirement, he led monthly worship services in area retirement homes. He had a passion for serving others both in his church and community. A special thanks to Dr. Daniel Harmon, Penny and his staff, and his faithful caretaker Martha Lofton. His funeral service will be 1:00 pm Saturday, January 23, 2010, in the sanctuary of First United Methodist Church, 701 Calder Avenue, with the Reverend Dr. Frank Alegria and Dr. John A. “Von” Dawson, Sr. officiating. Burial will follow immediately afterwards at Magnolia Cemetery. A gathering of his family and friends will begin 12 noon Saturday prior to the service at the church.
