J.E. “Judge” Callaway, 87, of Beaumont, died Sunday, January 10, 2010, at his residence in the company of his family.  A native of Rockdale, Texas and resident of Beaumont since 1943, Judge was a Mortgage Banker with South Coast Mortgage Company. He served in the Civilian Conservation Corps in Central Texas before he joined the United States Army.  Judge served in the South Pacific during World War II.

He attended schools in Nile, Thorndale and Rockdale, Texas.  Judge graduated from Sharp High School in 1939.  After sending his four children to college, he himself attended Lamar University.

Judge was a long time member of the congregation at Trinity United Methodist Church, the John Land Sunday School Class, and was a church usher captain for many years.

Joining Kiwanis Club nearly sixty years ago, he maintained forty-four years of perfect attendance.  He served as club president, Lieutenant Governor of the Texas-Oklahoma District, and attended many National and Kiwanis International Conventions.

Survivors include his wife of sixty-one years, Dorothy McQuary Callaway of Beaumont; children, Scott Callaway of Houston, Ted Callaway of Houston and Santa Fe, New Mexico, Page Callaway and her husband Brad Kraus of Santa Fe, New Mexico, and Lisa Callaway-Hamm and her husband Mike of Mason, Michigan; granddaughter, Callie Hamm of Mason, Michigan; sisters, Mary Emily Palermo and her husband Sam of Bryan, and Dorothy Louise Bolton of Dallas.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Ella Graham and Oscar Monroe Callaway; brothers, Wesley Callaway, Sr., Luther Callaway, Roy Callaway, and Elbert Callaway; and sisters, Bonnie Dyer, and Mable McCoy.

His memorial service will be 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, January 13, 2010, at Trinity United Methodist Church in the Dishman Chapel under the direction of Broussard’s, 1605 North Major Drive, Beaumont. A committal will be at Broussard’s Crematorium.
