While residing at Silverado Senior Citizen’s Facility in Spring, Texas Joy Helen Kendrick Hartzog Hughes passed away due to complications from Alzheimer’s disease.

She was called to be with our Lord on  Saturday, December 26, 2009.

Mrs. Hughes funeral service is scheduled for 2:00 P.M. on Wednesday, December 30, 2009 at the First Baptist Church in Nederland, with Reverend Adam Pardue officiating.

Interment will follow at Memory Gardens in Nederland. A gathering of family and friends with held on Tuesday evening from 5:00-8:00 P.M. at Broussard’s in Nederland.

Joy was born March 16, 1927 in Beaumont, Texas to the parents Roy Lee Kendrick and Callie Helen Scruggs. She was predeceased by two sisters, Mollie Laura Ellis and Madie Alene Kessinger and one brother Roy Frank “Bud” Kendrick.

Joy married James William Hartzog, Jr. on March 28, 1946. They had 3 children, James William Hartzog, Jr., Joyce Merle Phillips, and Jeanna Lea Schroeder. Joy was predeceased by “Bill” Hartzog on October 21, 1978. Joy remarried Clifford H. Hughes on November 11, 1989. She was widowed on October 12, 2005.

Joy was deeply involved in the First Baptist Church of Nederland and loved to sing with the Silvertones. She enjoyed a spirited game of canasta, dominoes and tick. Other interests included extensive traveling and her family.

Joy is survived her sister, Joann Jackson and brother Donald Dean Kendrick and by her three children, Jim, Joyce and Jeanna as well as three stepchildren, Jim Hughes, Rick Hughes and Susan Jones. She also is survived by 6 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.
