John E. Halbirt 
August 13, 1915 - December 17, 2009

John 94 years young died Wednesday, December 17, 2009, at Houston Northwest Medical Center. A native of Athens, Ohio and a longtime resident of Beaumont, John was a retired Purchasing Supervisor for Mobil and Mobil Chemical.  For the last 20 years John lived in Houston, first working on contract for Mobil and later so that he could be near his children, grand children, and great grand children.

 

He was preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, Margaret Plumly.  John, Daddy, Dear Old Dad, Mean Old Man, Great Poppa, Mr. John, leaves a daughter, Donna Margaret Nugent and husband, Don, son John Plumly and wife Mary Jo, grandsons Dan Nugent and wife Tammy, Dean Halbirt, grand-daughter Laura and husband Jason Joseph, great grand children Matthew, Jackson and Ted Nugent; Carol Ann and Patrick Halbirt, Haley and Avery Joseph.  On family gatherings John would often say “look what Margaret and I started”.

 

John was a 71 year member of the Grand Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons of Ohio, Savanna Lodge, number 466

 

In the early 1960’s John and Margaret built a second home on the Bolívar Peninsula.  John loved the beach and was somewhat famous for some of his beach buggies he used to transport beach toys between the house and the water.  His love for the “coast” has now passed to the fourth generation of the family.  

 

Higher education was important to John and as a result of this commitment; he directly influenced his children and grandchildren to achieve college educations. Through his generosity and financial support, his great-grandchildren will have the opportunity and the legacy of continuing his example.

 

He was a former member of First United Methodist Church of Beaumont, participated in the formation of Trinity United Methodist Church and a current member of Klein United Methodist.

 

The family wishes to express special thanks to John’s caregivers who gave him their loving kindness, support and attention. The family wishes to recognize the loving care provided by Imelda Meza, Imelda Yanez, Jessica Garza, Veronica Arjona, Sarah Criger, Yaqueline Rodriguez and Sonia Cantu and thank them for their dedication. Their skills and tender ministrations enhanced John’s final years and made it possible for him to remain at his home. They became his extended family, surrogate grandchildren, and also the recipients of his wisdom and advice.

 

A graveside service will be 11:00 a.m., Monday, December 21, 2009, at Magnolia Cemetery under the direction of Broussard’s, 2000 McFaddin, Beaumont. A gathering of his family and friends will be 10:00 a.m., Monday, until the time of the service, at the mortuary.
