Captain William "Bill" A. Bennett, Sr. 
October 1, 1917 - December 9, 2009

Captain William A. “Bill” Bennett, Sr., passed away Wednesday, December 9, 2009, at the age of 92.

 

Captain Bennett was born October 1, 1917, in Boston, Massachusetts and was educated in Winchester, Massachusetts.  He was a graduate of Kings Point Academy with the Class of ’38.  Captain Bennett joined Mobil Oil as Chief Officer at Gulf East Coast Fleet in December of 1946 and sailed in that rank until his promotion to Master in 1970.

 

Before moving to Beaumont to assume his position as Marine Superintendent of the Mobil Fleet, Bill and his family resided in Woburn, Massachusetts and Rye Beach, New Hampshire.  He was very active in the Beaumont Community; Bill was a member of the Beaumont and Brentwood Country Clubs, YMBL, Men of Jude, Knights of Columbus, American Legion, and MAST (Mobil Annuitants).

 

He is survived by his wife of sixty-three years, Ann H. (Meehan) Bennett; children, Nancy of Beaumont, William, Jr. of Boston, Massachusetts, Kevin of Beaumont, and Barbara of Rye Beach, New Hampshire; daughter-in-law, Denise Woolard of Woburn, Massachusetts; eight grandchildren; Kiley Burns, Ryan Bennett, Justin Jarrell, Josh Jarrell, Elizabeth Santos, William Bennett III, Courtney Woolard and Shelagh Woolard; three great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

 

He was preceded in death by his son, Lawrence; and his parents.

 

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10:00 a.m. Monday, December 14, 2009, at St. Jude Thaddeus Catholic Church with entombment to follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Park under the direction of Broussard’s, 1605 North Major Drive, Beaumont.  A gathering of his family and friends will be from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. with a Christian Vigil at 6:00 p.m. Sunday, December 13, 2009, at Broussard’s.
