Sylvia Griffiths Condon
September 16, 1925 - September 3, 2009

Sylvia Griffiths Condon, 83, passed away Thursday, September 3, 2009, surrounded by her loving family and caregivers.

A resident of Beaumont for sixty-two years, Sylvia was born September 16, 1925, to Alfred and Lydia Griffiths, in the town of Treherbert, located in the Rhondda Valley, Wales. At the age of eight, her family moved to Melksham, England, where she lived until attending the University of Cambridge, Pembroke College, earning a degree in chemistry, in 1943. After falling in love and marrying Beaumont native and Air Force Staff Sergeant Jess Condon, she moved to Beaumont in 1947. They remained married for sixty-one years, until his death in 2006.

Until illness prevented her involvement, Mrs. Condon remained an active member of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church since 1948. She and her husband served as children’s choir sponsors, and Sylvia also served as the assistant manager at St. Mark’s Treasure House for several years.

In addition to being a wonderful wife, Mrs. Condon was an exceptionally loving and caring mother to her four children, six grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. She was a sweet, special and respectful person to everyone she met, and was never less than a lady, in every sense of the word.

Mrs. Condon loved the sea and enjoyed spending time with her husband and family at their Bolivar Peninsula cabin. She learned to paint, and graced her family with many of her canvases. Mrs. Condon was also a successful gardener and reading was a favorite pastime. She will be greatly missed by her family.

Mrs. Condon is preceded in death by her husband, Jess Condon; parents, Alfred and Lydia Griffiths; and her brother, Ivor Griffiths.

She is survived by her daughters, Joanne Plucy and her husband Victor of Bellingham, Washington, and Shirley Patxot and her husband Felix of Beaumont; sons, Robert Condina and his wife Toni of Georgetown and Brian Condon and his wife Lisa of Beaumont; grandchildren, Stephanie Farrell and her husband David of Seattle, Washington, Todd Ienna and his wife Larissa of Portland, Oregon, Scott Berry and his wife Sabrina of Ardmore, Oklahoma, Kyle Condina, Kelli Condina, both of Georgetown, and Justin Condon of Beaumont; great-grandchildren, Hannah, Connor, and Chloe Farrell, Andrew and Kaitlyn Berry; brothers, John Griffiths, and Brian Griffiths and his wife Jill; and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to all of those who helped in her care, including Touched by an Angel Private Home Care, Christus Hospital St. Elizabeth and Harbor Hospice.

Funeral services will be 2:30 p.m., Saturday, September 5, 2009, at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church with interment to follow at Magnolia Cemetery under the direction of Broussard’s, 2000 McFaddin, Beaumont. A gathering of her family and friends will be from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m., the day of the service, at the mortuary.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, Beaumont Chapter, 700 North Street Ste. M, Beaumont, Texas 77701, phone number, 409-833-1613.
