Shelby Joseph Martel, 79, of Nome, died Saturday, June 18, 2016. He was born on August 2, 1936, in Beaumont, to Agatha Jannise Martel and Grady Martel, Sr., and had been a longtime resident of Nome. Shelby was a retired canal rider with Lower Neches Valley Authority after thirty-six years of employment.

He is survived by his son, Richard Martel and his wife, Gail, of Winnie; daughters, Sandy Martel and Diana Spivey and her husband, Darren, all of Nome; grandchildren, Tiffnie Gallier, Miranda Hendrix, Billy Joe Gallier, Keith Spivey, Nikki Spivey, Lesli Mims, and Hank Hargraves; three great-grandchildren; brothers, Virgil Martel, Tommy Martel, and Grady Martel, Jr., all of Nome; and sister, Mary Ida Futral, of North Carolina.

Shelby is preceded in death by his wife, Azelie (Dee Dee) Martel; and parents.

A gathering of Mr. Martel’s family and friends will be from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m., with his Rosary recited at 6:00 p.m., Sunday, June 19, 2016, at Broussard’s, 1605 North Major Drive, Beaumont. His funeral service will be 10:00 a.m., Monday, June 20, 2016, at Broussard’s, with his interment to follow at China Cemetery, China.
