Dr. Achyutananda Roy passed away at St. Luke’s Hospital in Houston on the evening of March 7, 2016, after suffering a stroke. Achyutananda, born on September 25, 1938, in Khiraty, Mednipur, India, was the oldest son of Pramila and Khudiram Roy.

Achyut attended Ramjibanpur Babulal Institute for high school before receiving his inter-science and medical degrees from the University of Calcutta in India. His surgical training was undertaken in the United Kingdom, where he became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons in 1967. He came to the United States in 1969 as a Fellow in Surgery at Wayne State University in Detroit before completing his surgical residence program at St. Clare Hospital in New York City in 1973.  In 1974 he became a Diplomate of the American Board of Surgery, and three years later in 1977, he became a fellow of the American College of Surgeons.  From 1977 to 1994, he practiced general surgery in Winnfield, Louisiana; Orange, Texas; and Beaumont, Texas.

He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather who sought to instill his family and loved ones with the values of honesty, integrity, discipline, hard work, and a deep reverence for their Indian cultural roots, for Vedic philosophy, and for the Hindu religion. Throughout his life, he strove to better himself through study and reflection and retained a lifelong interest in spiritual questions and principles by which to guide his life, leading him to membership in several organizations including the Chinmaya Mission of Beaumont, The Houston Durgabari Society, and the Vedanta Society. He traveled extensively, often seeking picturesque settings of natural beauty and places of great historical and cultural significance around the world. He was also an avid gardener, photographer, swimmer, and tennis player.

He is survived by his wife of forty-six years, Banalata; his sons, Amit, Samit, and Sanjit; his brother, Brahmananda; his sisters, Chhabi, Nanda, Puspa, and Maya; his granddaughter, Henley; and several other nieces, nephews, and family members.
