Lucy Evans Fanette, 100, of Beaumont, died peacefully at her residence at Calder Woods, Beaumont, Saturday, January 2, 2016. She was born on February 7, 1915, to Ida Elizabeth McDonald Evans and William Augustus Evans, in Lake Arthur, Louisiana.

Lucy spent her childhood in Louisiana and after attending Louisiana State University (LSU) for two years moved to Beaumont with her mother, and soon after began working at Gulf States Utilities. It was there that she met her future husband, J. Ben Fanette, and they were married in 1937. 

Lucy’s early married years were dedicated to the care and education of their four children.  She enjoyed being a member of Alpha Omega Sunday school class at First United Methodist Church in Beaumont and the Col. George C. Moffett Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution.  In the 1950’s, after bridge lessons at the YWCA, the game became an enduring interest for her for nearly sixty years.  This interest expanded her friendships. She delighted in hosting friends in her home even after she moved to Calder Woods.  Her other activities included volunteering at the voting poles and Some Other Place.  After husband Ben’s retirement in 1975, they especially enjoyed travelling around the United States until his death in 2003.  Chocolate was in Lucy’s number one food group and a box of it was always within her reach on the bedside table.  Her later years continued to include bridge games along with reading and daily puzzles from the local newspaper.

Lucy is survived by her children, Katherine Fouts and her husband, Bill; Margie Reeves and her husband, Les; James Fanette and his wife, Debbie; and Mary Fanette; grandchildren, David Fouts and his wife, Melissa; Phillip Fouts and his wife, Mara; Fred Fanette and his wife, Jeanie; and Ben Fanette III and his wife, Brandey; and great-grandchildren, Hannah Fouts, Noah Fouts, Taylin Fanette and Ethyn Fanette.

Lucy’s life was guided by a spirit of hospitality and generosity in the giving of herself to others.  She will be missed by many.

A gathering of Mrs. Fanette’s family and friends will begin at 10:00 a.m., with a memorial service at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, January 7, 2016, at First United Methodist Church, 701 Calder Avenue, Beaumont, under the direction of Broussard’s, 2000 McFaddin Avenue, Beaumont. A reception will follow in the Longe Chapel.
