Arthur "A.J." Clubb, Jr.
November 24, 1927 - June 14, 2015

Arthur Joseph “A.J.” Clubb, Jr., 87, of Granbury, formerly of Beaumont, died Sunday, June 14, 2015, surrounded by his wife, children, and granddaughter. He was born on November 24, 1927, in Raywood, Texas (Liberty County), to Eda Ellen Carr Clubb and Arthur Joseph Clubb.

A.J.’s early years were spent on his parents’ small ranch helping his father with the cattle, enjoying vacations with his cousins at the beach, and learning his school lessons by the light of a coal oil lamp. He graduated from Hull-Daisetta High School.

After graduation from high school, A.J. continued his studies in Houston at “a little school called Rice Institute”. On weekends he would catch a ride or take the bus home to help his father with chores and enjoy his mother’s home-cooked meals. Summers during college were spent working on an electrical gang at Sun Company in the “school-boy program”. One summer was spent installing a power line to the Sun Oil Company pump station at High Island. A.J.’s hard work and study paid off in 1949 when he graduated from Rice Institute (now a University) with a degree in Electrical Engineering. He returned home to Raywood and installed electricity in his parents’ home when service became available from the rural electric company. He was hired by Sun Oil Company as a full-time employee.

A.J. entered the United States Air Force in 1952 as a Second Lieutenant. After seventeen months of active service, he joined the reserves until he was honorably discharged in October 1965.

A.J. met the love of his life, Beris Allen Chance, through a mutual friend, and they were married on March 22, 1952. Rearing two sons and a daughter kept them busy for many years, but after the children were on their own and retirement began, A.J. and Beris began their second honeymoon.

They enjoyed traveling to Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Italy, Switzerland, Hawaii and many other places around the world. A.J. particularly enjoyed the time he spent with his son, Marty, working at the family winery, L’Ecole Nº 41, in Walla Walla, Washington.

A.J.’s career with Sun Oil Company spanned the years from college until 1984 when he retired. His time at Sun was filled with business travel, interesting projects, and the opportunity to meet many men who became life-long friends. After retirement, A.J. continued to work as a consultant with C&C Services and was instrumental in engineering the electrical network that would allow schools in the Port Arthur School district to utilize computer technology. In 2001, A.J. retired again – this time to a more relaxed life. In 2005, A.J. was recognized for being a Licensed Professional Engineer in Texas for fifty years. He also held licenses in four other states.

A.J. and Beris joined Trinity United Methodist Church in 1976. Since 1987 the HAMACO class has provided loving support, care and fellowship – a true family in Christ. As a member of Trinity, A.J. served on the building committee and dedicated many hours to the replacement of the HVAC system.

Survivors include his loving wife of sixty-three years, Beris; sons, Jayson Clubb and his wife, Valerie, of Granbury, Texas; and Martin Clubb and his wife, Megan, of Walla Walla, Washington; daughter, Cherri Clubb Wynne and her husband, Rick, of Flower Mound, Texas; grandchildren, Matthew Clubb and wife, Kathryn; Austin Wynne; Riley Clubb; Rebecca Clubb; and Katherine Wynne; and great-granddaughter, Savannah Grace Clubb.

A.J. was preceded in death by his grandson, Jayson Clubb, Jr.

A memorial service for Mr. Clubb will be 11:00 a.m., Monday, June 29, 2015, at Trinity United Methodist Church, 3430 Harrison Avenue, under the direction of Broussard's, 2000 McFaddin Avenue, Beaumont.
