James "Sonny" B. Matthews 
August 12, 1934 - June 6, 2015

James B. “Sonny” Matthews, Jr., 80, of Sour Lake, died Saturday, June 6, 2015.  He was born on August 12, 1934, in Jasper, to Lois Jefferson Matthews and James Burnice Matthews, Sr.  Sonny retired as a sheet metal worker with Sheet Metal Union #196.  He was a longtime member of Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church in Sour Lake where Sonny served as 3rd Degree Knight with Knights of Columbus. He loved fishing and wood carving.

 

Survivors include his children, Michaelene Green and her husband, Donald, of Hixson, Tennessee; Jackie Lynn Bennett and her husband, Lyle, of Dunbar, West Virginia; and Lawrence Matthews of Nederland; grandchildren, Christopher B. Cox of Hixson, Tennessee; Thomas J. Matthews and Jeremiah L. Matthews, both of Nederland; Tiffany Sadler and her husband, Ben, of Dunbar, West Virginia; and Derrick Bennett and his wife, Jessica, and Regina Hoffpauir, of Lumberton; great-grandchildren, Alexis and Amber Cox of Hixson, Tennessee, Caleb M. Matthews of Nederland, Cameron Amos of Port Arthur, Justin and Emily Sadler of Dunbar, West Virginia, and Lettie and Braylee Halbert of Center.

 

A Rosary for Mr. Matthews will be recited at 9:30 a.m., with a gathering of his family and friends to follow, Wednesday, June 10, 2015, at Broussard's, 1605 North Major Drive, Beaumont.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, at Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church, 225 West Barkley, Sour Lake, with his interment will follow at Rosedale Cemetery, Sour Lake.
