Marjorie Ruth Roberts Sawyer 
July 30, 1930 - November 10, 2014

Marjorie Sawyer, 84, passed away on Monday, November 10, 2014, in Beaumont. Marjorie was born in Beaumont, to Marguerite Roberts and Robert F. Roberts, on July 30, 1930.

 

As a student, Marjorie excelled in music. After her graduation from South Park High School, she attended Baylor University. While at Baylor, she met Joseph Ray Sawyer, whom she married. After receiving her Bachelor of Music Education from Baylor in 1951, Marjorie became the mainstay of the orchestra program in the Waco Independent School District. She also conducted the Waco All-City Orchestra. After she and her family moved to College Station in 1967, she continued to teach music in the Bryan Independent School District. In 1977, Marjorie returned to Beaumont where she was a public school teacher until her retirement in 1988.

 

A lifelong Baptist, Marjorie was an active member of First Baptist Church, Beaumont. She was also a member of the Baylor Alumni Association and an avid fan of Baylor University athletics.

 

Marjorie is survived by her son, Chris Sawyer and his wife, Susan, of Fort Worth; grandson, Timothy Sawyer; granddaughter, Paula Hall; great-granddaughter, Alexandra Brodeur; great-grandson, Preston Hall; and nephew, Jerry Wheeler and his wife, Bonnie, of Beaumont.

 

She was preceded in death by her parents; and her beloved sister, Audrey Jane Wheeler of Beaumont.

 

A gathering of Mrs. Sawyer’s family and friends will be begin at 12:00 p.m., with her funeral service to follow at 2:00 p.m., Friday, November 14, 2014, at Broussard’s, 1605 North Major Drive, Beaumont. Interment will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Park, Beaumont.
