Mary Frances Floyd Smith 
October 10, 1917 - June 21, 2014

Mary Frances Floyd Smith, 96, died Saturday, June 21, 2014, at Fairy’s Landing, Hull. The oldest of three, she was born on October 10, 1917, in Garrison, to Lou Willie Crawford Floyd and O.P. Floyd. Her family moved to the San Jacinto Battleground Park in 1928 when her father was appointed superintendent and she witnessed the building of the monument and development of the park. In 1934, she was Valedictorian of Pasadena High School and went on to graduate from Sam Houston State Teacher’s College in 1937. Frances began her teaching career at the I00F Home in Corsicana and subsequently taught in LaPorte I.S.D., Deer Park I.S.D., and Pasadena I.S.D., before retiring in 1982 from Clear Creek I.S.D.

 

In 1939, she married N.A. Smith with whom she celebrated sixty-seven years of marriage before his death in 2007. They lived most of their life in Pasadena and retired to their ranch in Crockett.

Frances was a person of many talents and interests which included fishing, gardening, sewing, needlework, reading, and traveling. She served as a chairman of the March of Dimes, President of the Garden Club, and in the Children’s Theater Guild in Pasadena.

 

In Crockett, she was active in the Davy Crockett Chapter of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas and the Major Jarrell Beasley Chapter of the National Daughters of the American Revolution. Frances also served as a docent of the Monroe-Crook House. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in both Pasadena and Crockett.

 

Frances is preceded in death by her son, Ney A. Smith.

 

She is survived by her daughter-in-law, Betsy Smith; daughters, Sherry Smith Brackin and her husband, Bill; and Priscilla Smith Craft and her husband, Rob; seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

 

The family will forever be grateful for the happy environment and loving care provided by the staff at Fairy’s Landing.

 

A gathering of Mrs. Smith’s family and friends will be from 5:30 p.m. until 7:00 p.m., Tuesday, June 24, 2014, at Broussard’s, 1605 North Major Drive, Beaumont. Her graveside service will be 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, June 25, 2014, at Evergreen Memorial Park, 1601 North 4th Street, Crockett.

 

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
