Dr. Elmore “Mo” Kalbaugh was born in Los Angeles, California, on January 25, 1921, to Hazel Zehrbach and Elmore Porter Kalbaugh, Sr. He grew up surrounded by aunts, uncles, and cousins in Cumberland, Maryland. The family moved to Portsmith, Virginia, where he graduated from high school in 1938.

Mo worked for the Norfolk Navy Yard then attended Carson-Newman College in Jefferson City, Tennessee.  He worked his way through college there in the chemistry lab and attended Medical School at University of Virginia as a Navy officer.  Mo was married to Fay Pearl Cullom in 1944 in San Angelo, Texas, by Fay’s father, Reverend Peter Cullom.  He received a Master’s Degree in Public Health from University of California at Berkley in 1951.

Mo worked as a physician with the Public Health Service, and then worked in private practice in Port Arthur before working in Beaumont at the Beaumont Neurological Center and Baptist Hospital until he retired in 1983. During his career he was active with the county and state medical societies, Rotary Club, and the Beaumont Art Museum. Mo was an avid fisherman and golfer, wrote two books of poetry, and loved to travel.

Dr. Kalbaugh is survived by his wife, Fay, their three children, Ed Kalbaugh and his wife, Mary Rose, of Los Angeles, California; Jolie McCoy and her husband, Alan, of Rapid City, South Dakota; and Sandra Anderson and her husband, Steve, of Lompoc, California; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren; and his sister, Madrea Keeler of Tallahassee, Florida

A gathering of Dr. Kalbaugh’s family and friends will begin at 9:30 a.m., Friday, December 6, 2013, in the Edith McKnight Parlor of Trinity United Methodist Church, 3430 Harrison Avenue, Beaumont. His funeral service will follow at 11:00 a.m., Friday in the Dishman Chapel at the church, with interment will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Park, Beaumont.
