Terry Wayne (Smith) Walker
November 20, 2013 |
Terry was born on March 1, 1955, in Killeen, Texas. He left his earthly life to enter his eternal life on November 20, 2013, in Beaumont. Terry was a very special baby, young boy, and young man. He entered this world as a "special needs" baby, he was diagnosed with Down's syndrome. This never slowed Terry down in anyway. His mother, Delores, fought long and hard for the development of The Beaumont State Center which provided learning experiences for the mentally challenged. When Terry became school age he entered the South Park School District. Delores was told at that time that Down's syndrome children could not read. She proved them wrong. She taught Terry to read and convinced his teacher to continue in this effort. He also learned to print and could send "Thank You" notes whenever he received any sort of a gift. Terry could read most of the newspaper and was very apt at reading the TV Guide. The Center once again provided Terry services when he graduated from the South Park School District. He worked in a workshop environment and took great pride in his work and especially his paycheck. As he grew older he was employed by the State of Texas at the Beaumont State Center as a clerk in the copy department, he excelled at that. The Center provided many opportunities for Terry. He was in a Boy Scout program, Special Olympics, plays (he played the "Tin Man" in a Wizard of Oz presentation) dances, and travel experiences. Terry went on a cruise, to Disney World, Nashville, Ski Trip, Branson, and many other places. Always one ready to go and have a really good time. He went to many concerts and had all of the T-shirts to prove it. Terry "retired" after 24 years of service and was honored with an extravagant retirement party. He continued to receive services from the Center for a number of years. Terry was so devoted to his friends there that he learned sign language so that he could communicate with those with hearing impairments. Terry's passion was "The Wizard of Oz" and his bedroom at home was totally decorated with all of the characters from that movie. He owned the VCR of the movie and could lip sync it entirely. Terry was a devoted church goer. He and his mother belonged to a small Baptist Church in Cheek. Terry attended a special Sunday School Class, often ushered, sang in the choir, and prayed the Morning Prayer. His Christianity went way beyond the walls of his church. He loved and was loved by everyone he came in contact with. Thanks to his mother, dad, and brother, Terry led a happy, full life. Today, he is "Somewhere over the Rainbow", officially known as heaven. Survivors include his mother, Delores Walker; brother, Shawn Walker and his wife, Diane; niece, Nikki Walker, whom he adored; aunts, Juanita Killen and Dodie Breaux; uncle, Mike Greene and his wife, Wanda; and many cousins who loved him dearly. He is preceded in death by his dad, Clint Walker. Terry never gave anyone a piece of his mind, but he gave everyone a piece of his heart. He has left his footprints on our hearts, and we will never, ever forget him. A gathering of Terry’s family and friends will be from 4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m., Thursday, November 21, 2013, at Broussard’s, 1605 North Major Drive, Beaumont. His funeral service will be 10:00 a.m., Friday, November 22, 2013, at Broussard’s, officiated by Reverend Ben West of Wesley United Methodist Church, Beaumont. Interment will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Park, Beaumont.
