Robert "Red" L. Newsom

Robert
L. “Red” Newsom, 75, of Port Neches, died Wednesday, October 23, 2013, at The
Medical Center of Southeast Texas, Port Arthur. He was born September 12, 1938,
in Palacios to Francis Marie Cavallin and Lewis Robert Newsom. Red was a
veteran of the United States Army National Guard and Army Reserve. He retired
from Asbestos Local #22, after forty-five years as an insulator. Red was a member of Pt. Acres
Sportsman Club and Fraternal Order of Eagles in Nederland and Palacios. He enjoyed duck
hunting and fishing.
Red
is survived by his wife of fifty-five years, Norma Newsom; son, Mitchell Newsom
and his wife, Melissa; daughters, Michelle Smith and her husband, Greg and
Marlinda Polanco, all of Port Neches; grandchildren, Jackie Melanson, Kirstie
Gros and her husband, Dereck, and Brittiany and Kristina Polanco;
great-grandchildren, Hayden and Tanner Melanson and Gage Gros; step grandchildren,
Nicole and Joseph; sisters, Ann Coats and her husband, Lonnie, of Sulphur,
Louisiana and Lillian Spillers and her husband, John, of Port Acres; brother,
Wayne Newsom and his wife, Marina, of Port Acres; several nieces, nephews; and
a host of other relatives and friends.
He
is preceded in death by his parents, Lewis and Francis Newsom; and grandsons,
Rustin and Dustin Smith.
A
gathering of Mr. Newsom’s family and friends will be from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00
p.m., Saturday, October 26, 2013, at Broussard’s, 505 North 12th
Street, Nederland. His funeral service will be 10:00 a.m. Sunday, October 27,
2013, at Broussard’s, with interment to follow at Memory Gardens of Jefferson
County, Nederland.
