Charles “C. R.” Richard Thurber, 83, of Winnie, died Thursday, September 26, 2013, at Medical Center of Southeast Texas, Port Arthur. On November 9, 1929, Charles was born in Stillwell, Oklahoma, to Opal Boyd Thurber and Charles Vernon Thurber.

C. R. worked as a tool pusher in the oil industry and had lived in the Winnie area for fifty years. C. R.  enjoyed gardening as long as he was able; a do all, help all person and would give anyone a helping hand.

C. R. is survived by his loving wife of fifty-four years, Virginia Thurber; sons, Charles Richard Thurber, II both of Winnie; and Michael Ray Thurber of Hamshire; grandchildren, Charles Richard “Trey” Thurber, III, Connaught James Thurber, Michael Ray Thurber II, Hailey Michelle Thurber; brother, James L. Thurber of Lakewood, Colorado; many nieces and nephews; and numerous other family members and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Wilma Buckmaster and Elizabeth Ewell; brother, Robert L. Thurber.

A gathering of Mr. Thurber’s family and friends will be from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m., Wednesday, October 2, 2013, at Broussard’s, 134 West Buccaneer Drive, Winnie. A private family committal will be at a later date.
