I was saddened to hear of his passing, but relieved that he has been freed from the health issues he was dealing with. My thoughts and prayers continue to be with the Dyess family. I have such fond memories of Wayne from LU as both a professor and a colleague ... he will definitely be missed. Though I was unable to attend the visitation or funeral, I was there in spirit, and I will always remember his kind spirit, willingness to help, and fantastic talent!

Most of my earliest memories of Wayne Dyess go back to 1977 when I was a sophomore at Lamar University. This was Wayne's first year on the full time faculty at Lamar. That year, both he and Jimmy Simmons directed the 350-member Lamar University Big Red Marching Band, "The Grandest Band in the Land," of which I was a very proud member.

I am more than a little sad after the passing of Wayne, who was one of the most caring individuals I have ever known. Not only was Wayne a wonderful mentor for me during my years at Lamar, but also he was always there for me during some of the most difficult and stressful times in my life. He celebrated the good times with me, too.

Wayne was always a significant source of encouragement for me. He believed in me and that meant a lot to me. I am a better musician, band director, and person because of him.

Wayne was also one of the most talented musicians I have ever known. He was a world class trombone player, very effective teacher, top notch sound engineer, and one of the very best arrangers of band music anywhere (his beautiful arrangement of The Star Spangled Banner is legendary).

Often Wayne would tell me how much he missed 2 of my other wonderful mentors at Lamar - Pete Wiley and Raul Ornelas. Now he is able to see them again in a much better place.

RIP my dear beloved friend and mentor! I will miss you so much, and I thank the good Lord for all that you have done for me!

Dear Lynda, I just learned about Wayne's passing. Wayne and I were good friends and colleagues together in the New Sousa Band. He sat right behind me and I will miss that beautiful trombone sound in my ears in the upcoming NSB concerts. I know that Wayne is a Christian and I, and you and your family, Lynda, have the assurance that he is in the presence of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and enjoying the fruit of his salvation in Christ. My prayer is that God has wrapped His everlasting arms around you and your family at this very special time in your lives. May God's blessing be upon you all.
