My sincere condolences to the entire family. Although I did not know Druse personally, I was also a CAP Marine in Vietnam in 1967-68.
CAP was both a security and a civic action program, an attempt to win the hearts and minds of the people. It had some notable successes, and some military men and writers have speculated that if introduced sooner and more widely, it might have had an effect on the outcome of the war.
CAP units were generally a squad of 12 - 14 Marines in a village, working with their native militia counterparts to provide security, and assist the villagers in various civic action projects such as wells, roads, and schools.
The men in the program generally shared a desire to help the people of Vietnam, and many were wounded or killed in the course of the war, due to their small numbers and relative isolation.
Druse Foreman was one of a small number of a very special group of men, risking their lives for the freedom (as we perceived it at the time) of a foreign country, and people they had never met before.
