Commander James "Jim" A. Oliver, Jr., U.S. Navy, Retired
July 9, 1917 - October 31, 2011
Diane Nizza (Houston, TX)

I was privileged and honored to have Uncle Jimmy as my uncle. Having read Tom Brokaw's Greatest Generation, I can certainly relate to his theory. That generation was one to be admired and imitated. They helped to shape our country into one of a great world power. It seemed everyone did their part to advance our nation in strength, in education, science, medicine and quality of life. It is a hard act to follow.

I admired his many accomplishments, but one of his greatest accomplishments was to give me Aunt Pete as my aunt and four cousins whom I love dearly. I was so happy that my uncle decided to "retire", if you can call it that, in Beaumont, reuniting our family which had been separated for so many years. That was before Skype and email, of course. Besides sharing my love of learning and teaching, Uncle James showed me the healthy aspect of having a hearty laugh.

I feel blessed to have the family that I have: my parents and sister, two wonderful aunts and uncles, and 8 fabulous cousins and their families.

My father was blessed to have had such warm and loving friends. Folks found it easy to love Dad, as he thought of others and their needs before his own. He lived to serve, and his long and productive life is a legacy for his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
No matter in what aspect of his life you knew our dad, you knew he loved his Country, his family and the Lord. He cared for the less fortunate in so many ways, and as a Boy Scout leader, guided the future leader-citizens of the country he loved so dearly.
We appreciate the loving thoughts shared by those who knew Dad and we thank those who have honored his life by coming to pay their respects to Dad and our families.
He and Mom are now holding hands for eternity. We miss them both but we have beautiful memories of the love they shared with each other and with us all that keep them alive in our hearts.

Rev. Marv Howland (Orange, TX)

I was honored to be "Jims" Chaplain for 20 years, what a great man of God and country. I share in your loss and join you spiritually in your grieving. Few men have contributed as much to our nation as did the Commander. I learned a great deal about life from him and he will always be a part of my special memories. To the children; the best memorial you can provide for your Dad, is to serve God and Country like he did, and when you see our beautiful flag flying in the wind - remember - it's only there, because of great men like him. He is now with "Pete" and they are both in wonderful health and now will enjoy the eternal bliss of heaven.
God be with you all.

Mark S. Browning (College Station, TX)

I worked with Jim as Scoutmaster of Troop 177 at Trinity United Methodist Church from 1990 to 1995. He was always there for the governing Troop Committee as well as the weekly activities with the boys. I will always remember his oft repeated expression "By golly!". Scouting has lost one of its best.
