Lulu L. Smith Washburn
November 7, 1926 - March 1, 2011
Dorthea Robinson, DVM (College Station, TX)

When I was a graduate student at the University of Texas in Austin, my husband and I met Lulu and we became friends. I want to cry knowing she has died. The last time I saw her, about five years ago when I went to Beaumont to visit, she told me that she wanted to live long enough to take care of her husband in his final problems and i am glad to learn she was granted this final wish. I am sorry for you alll. Dorthea

Paul and I will be driving to Beaumont from Houston today for the services, but in case we don't get a chance to visit with the family, we wanted to let all of you know how special Lulu was to us. We made Beaumont our home for 35 years and our meeting Lulu and Wes and becoming friends with them was a great highlight of our life there.
A premier memory of our friendship was our 16-day trip to Japan with them in 1988. As Wes said, "We back-packed all over Japan with two tons of luggage!" The trip was challenging, hilarious at times and, above all, bonding.
Lulu showed such love and caring to her friends and family and to the larger community of Beaumont. Her commitment to serve the city as councilwoman for 20 years was so commendable. In the earlier days of that tenure, she was practicing medicine, as well.
We shall deeply miss Lulu's presence with us here on this earth but know that God has His own mission for her in the realms of Heaven. What an assignment that must be!

With love and prayers,
Carole and Paul Mattingly

Lulu, Wes, the dogs, and the horses were a big part of my life growing up. It doesn't matter how long someone lives. Its never long enough.

I am so sorry for your loss. What a fine Dr. and lady she was. I was so lucky to know Karen who was able to help me get in to see her. Karen, I will keep your family in my prayers. I know you have wonderful memories that hopefully will bring you God's peace.
