"He was a friend of mine."
If you lived in Winnie, you knew who fixed the boats... who sold the freshest shrimp. But more than that you would soon know that Mr. Smith was a good man.
He wasn't a rich man but he was rich in smiles, laughter and encouragement. He cared about those he knew.
He was rich in honor, integrity and his in his way of behaving throughout the days. And so we were rich all our lives in having known Mr. Smith. If you left him a boat motor, you knew where it was and you got honest dealings and works.
I first knew him when I was seven and we moved to Winnie. Lisa and I were the eldest in our families...and later in the same grade, her Mom was big-hearted enough to invite over four more kids to join her seven... and Danny just a baby... Oh, the fun on that huge back bedroom that was for the four girls. Her Dad shrimped and so there was always hard work with lots of good food.
I remember he 'sold' shrimp and at such a cheap price he could have made little profit from selling to neighbors and friends. , Well, the work was something they all did those years. I'm sure frozen fingers by the hour were the lot of many long days.
He would not tolerate a "dam fool" but lost his smile and the happy, kindly manner we all knew and would either remove that fool or whatever it took.
You could count on Mr. Smith or Marvin as you may have been priviledged to know him by. He made folks here feel that the world was brighter for his having passed through it.
I called him "Mr. Smith" but "He was a friend of mine."
