As a child I loved going to my grandmothers for Christmas or for summer vacation. It was quite the contrast from the dessert southwest to the piney woods of east Texas. She would always be the first one up before the sun, to make the coffee, biskets, sausage, and of course the Mayhall jelly, to feed the deer hunting party before we went to the woods, and then have lunch ready by the time we got back. She spent a great deal of time making sure we all had enough to eat. She always had chickens, and it was a thrill when she would ask one of us to go collect the eggs. She always had a bunch of wild cats living underneath her house that she would throw food scraps to, and we would spend hours chasing them or the chickens. I used to love going fishing in that lake in front of her house, and she would ask me if I caught a "trout", to me a trout was something you caught out of a mountain stream, that had the colors of the rainbow, but what she meant was a "bass'. I remember the walks we would take down the back road across the branch to the "OLD PLACE" or down the lane to the creek to the "swimmin hole". There are many great memorys about my "MAW MAWS" house back in the woods that I will always cherish.

The memory that I remember most is when I was about
twelve years old and Maw Maw took me squirrel hunting. She
had a little black dog named Lady that was a great squirrel dog.
Maw Maw and I would walk the dirt roads out in the woods and listen for Lady's bark.We would follow the bark to where Lady had chased a squirrel up a tree. Once we could see the
squirrel in the tree Maw Maw would let me have the first shot
with her 410 shot gun.
I think this memory stands out the most because it was something that we did, just the two of us. I will miss her!
