James Dillard Austin

Sandra & Russ Bridges (Beaumont, TX)

Such an amazing man with a brilliant vision toward removing some of the eyesores in Beaumont and replacing them with lovely business buildings. As the Administrative Office of the United States Attorneys Office (USAO), I was honored to work with Mr. Austin and Greg in the renovation of the old car garage at 700 North Street to turn it into a beautiful building for the occupancy of the USAO and other agencies. As we outgrew the 700 North space, his vision brought us to view the dilapidated Sears Building where vagrants had almost ruined the building. But with his brilliance, he turned the Sears building into a beautiful structure, keeping the old marble stairs, adding beautiful columns and creating a building that houses many federal offices as well as non-federal offices. The beauty of that building lends to such an improvement to the downtown Beaumont area. He was so generous with his time and services. At Christmas time and other special occasions, Mr. Austin, Gregg and their beautiful wife's (Virginia and Janice) would show up with platters of delights and Janice's homemade punch to make the occasions even more special. In 1998 my husband and I suffered the sudden loss of our precious 22 year old daughter, having lost a son of his own, he understood that pain. His office was just up one floor from my office, he would just call and say "how are you today, hang in, you will be OK". He did not come to the office to say that because he realized sometime face to face would mean tears. His phone calls were comforting and I will never forget that kindness. His grandchildren were his delight, he absolutely sparkled when he spoke of them. He knew he was blessed and they were too.
You will be missed Mr. Austin.
With Gratitude for your friendship, we bid you rest.
