I am very saddened to hear of the passing of one of the greatest band directors that I have ever known. He really was the model of a compassionate , encouraging, caring musician that still strived for excellence in all that he did. God bless the family and please know that you are in my thoughts and prayers.

Dr. Dyess encouraged me to be in Jazz Band at Lamar and I loved it. He always seemed to have a smile on his face. He will be dearly missed.

I am deeply saddened at the passing of Dr. Dyess. He was a teacher, mentor, great friend, and father like to all of us who were his students. He continually gave me encouragement both when I was his student and later as I was in the teaching profession. Everytime I saw him he had that big smile and would always give me a hug. The memories of being under his direction both in the marching band, jazz band, and in his trombone studio are truly wonderful. He created such an atmosphere of family whether it was a 250 piece marching band or a 18 piece jazz band. His trombone playing was truly unbelievable. I believe also he was one of the finest arrangers of music I have ever known. His renditions of the National Anthem, all those great marching band songs were truly incredible and would put chills up anyone's spine. One day while recording in his studio he shared his testimony and his faith in Jesus Christ and I know that his love for others was very Christ-like in example. Although he has left us for a great place, his memory and his great passion for music will remain for those of us who were fortunate to have had him teach us. God bless all of the Dyess family. You are all truly loved!!!

Dear Dyess Family,

My thoughts and prayers are with you at this time. As many other have said, Doc touched my life and help to mold me into the person I am today.. He could always bring the best out of anyone not just musically but personally as well. We are sure going to miss Doc but I know he and Doc O are up there playing music again and looking down on us smiling.
