Rest easy now my friend.
Was playing Texas League baseball in 1966 against the Senators when this burly kid named Kooter began pitching crazy fast balls against my team, the White Sox. Amazingly, one little squirt stuck his bat out as one of those heaters came to the plate and rocketed a screamer right back to this Kooter guy.This Kooter fella never flinched as he just sucked that ball into his glove. Ball slapped leather, crowd gasped, and the place just went crazy. There was Kooter, that big smile on his face that never seemed to vanish for all the years the man was Kooter.
Was never that close to Kooter through junior high and high school, but, when you saw Kooter, you saw a kid with a smile and a big loping gait in his step.
Been 12, maybe 15 years since last I crossed paths with the big fella at a convenience store he was running in Nederland.
Last time, like all the times before, there was that Kooter smile and a friendly Texas League memory of childhoods past.
Carry on my friend. I'll remember ya and I bet alot of others will too.
