To the Family of Mr. Harvey Davis,

I wanted you to know what a special man Mr. Davis always was to me.

I met Mr. Davis when I walked into his Honors biology class in 1969 at W.W. Samuell H.S. Mr. Davis was a very tough teacher, but a very caring and kind soul. I remember so clearly how helpful he would be and how he'd go to the ends of the earth to help a student if he or she needed help.

After I graduated, I saw him here and there, at the grocery store, and then, eventually, lost touch.

Some decades ago, I joined First Presbyterian of Mesquite -- and, after the service where I affirmed my faith, Mr. Davis approached me and reminded me he had been my Honors biology teacher. I recognized him instantly!

By this point in my life, I didn't feel odd about hugging him and I did just that. He gave me a warm hug in return.

The next week, he approached me with the gift of a daffodil he'd grown in his garden.

I love flowers, so I truly enjoyed the flowers he and Mrs. Davis planted and tended at the church. They were always far beyond beautiful.

We talked often, before and after church services, until I became too ill to attend. He and Mrs. Davis were always very kind and they often wrote me cards and letters to cheer me up.

I wrote back, and tried to keep up after they moved south, but eventually lost touch, I'm sorry to say. However, they were never far from my mind and my heart. They have been in my prayers for years and years.

I am very sorry for your loss, because Mr. Davis was a man of sterling character, and he made a huge difference in a lot of kids' lives -- mine being one of them. I only specifically remember two teachers from that period in my life, and Mr. Davis was one of them.

Please know that he will always be alive in my mind and heart, and while I know his loss is overwhelming, he is with God and safe in His hands. You can be assured that the flower beds of Heaven have gained a wonderful new gardener.

God could not have chosen better.

Please give my love and condolences to Mrs. Davis.

God bless you; your entire family -- and Mr. Davis -- remain in my prayers.

Sincerely,
Laura Virgil

To the Thornton Family, Sorry for the loss of your father and grandfather. Mom would always speak of him as how sweet and kind he was to his wife. I know he will be missed, but know that God is with you and your family
