I offer compassion to Mary, Laura and Dan, as well as the rest of Joe's precious family and dear friends, as you learn to live without his physical presence. I know that you have many tender, humorous, and remarkable moments from which to draw comfort. May you be peaceful and protected in your journey.

He was the first, but not the only officer in the military. Although he did take great pleasure in the fact that I didn’t outrank him. “Little brother” always enjoyed his thoughts on how and why we have to fight illness in this life. Hope he doesn’t have to drink that lousy Pearl beer anymore, although no one is still likely to take his beer. We’ll miss his corny jokes, and my wishes for peace for the family.
