A close friend

Alton was inspirational for me. Though I am not a believer, he made me almost want to be believe. I was in constant awe witnessing his works ranging from his community and church service to his mentorship of the halfway house felonies -- Alton just quietly inspired all around him. He was a humble, honest man with nothing to prove that walked with a strength and conviction few others match.
Alton had humor and grace even in his final hours, expressing concern over in his business, family, and the house plants. Even at deaths door he was organizing and plotting, working and giving orders. Most of all he loved his family. The loss of Alton had a ripple affect leaving this world just that much darker and less idealistic for those of us left behind. If there is a heaven, rest assured, Alton is up there looking down on us quietly judging the way we are moving our lawn. :). RIP big guy, we miss and love you.

As a young married woman with a disabled sick husband Alton took care of my vehicles on several occasions. He went out of his way to work with me when I had money issues. He was a man who truly cared about the people he served and you knew it. I have been there many times when someone down on their luck would come in asking for money and he would send them to the Pig Stand (I am telling my age, Lol) and tell them to just tell the waitress to put it on his account and he never did it in a way that made a person feel beneath him. I truly believe he knew what the saying "but for the grace of God there go I" and he lived by that. Things got better and I had newer vehicles so I didn't see him as much as in my younger years but in the last few years my new husband went there often to get LIT's vehicles serviced, so I kept up with how he was doing. My human heart is saddened by the loss of a man I considered to be a friend and admired very much. It makes me hurt less to consider October 31st 2014 as his "heavenly birthday." My spiritual heart knows that he is in heaven with our Lord, with no pain, no tears, no worries....and if God has a vehicle in heaven Alton is most likely telling him what's wrong with it. We will all see him again one day. Much love and prayers to you and your family.
